Dear Global Studies students,
Glad to see you again today. I appreciated your ability to speak and listen purposefully to one another while we spent some time discussing the election. Remember, here at Westview we celebrate diversity, consider multiple perspectives, and most of all value everyone in our community. In the coming weeks we'll spent time learning more deeply about the craft of argument, where we can take a deeper look into some of the issues most pressing in your hearts and minds today.

Remember, here at Westview we celebrate diversity, consider multiple perspectives, and most of all value everyone in our community. Learning Targets:
- I can explain how culture reflects and shapes society (KN 15).
- I can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing (C0 1).
- I can identify critical components of culture using specific examples from my life.
- RAP: Rather than jump into my normal and planned curriculum, we spent a bit of time reflecting and discussion what we know about the election. Students first spent some time writing responses to the following: "What are you feeling/thinking today?" and "What is one question you have about the election?" Students wrote their responses anonymously and then used the "paper fight" strategy for sharing the responses aloud in a circle. The purpose here is to give students opportunities to share how they are feeling and what they are thinking without the sometimes-harsh spotlight of others listening. Students read responses aloud, and then we spent time popcorn discussing and responding to one another. I appreciate everyone's thoughtfulness and effort!
- Danger of A Single Story: With both classes students had additional time to receive instruction and modeling about the Danger of A Single Story assignment. The purpose is to provide students with opportunities to write about their culture so they can become more familiar with them. Using the framework of "Danger of A Single Story" is to highlight how we often only see or focus on one aspect of our lives, rather than the diversity of cultures that influence all of us. You can find the assignment instructions here. Students are expected to complete the graphic organizer with at least one story by next class.
