Welcome back from the long weekend! I trust everyone had a chance to rest and relax and stay dry despite the wild weather. I am feeling re-charged and excited about our last two projects before we ending our first unit, "Where I'm From: Introduction to Geography." Here's what we worked on today:
Learning Targets:
Learning Targets:
- I can demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of locations and regions (KN 7).
- I can communicate and work effectively within a team or group (BLT 3).
- I can create a thematic map using information from articles, graphs, and chart.
- RAP: We opened class today by spending time reflecting on our first quarter of school today. Students worked on this 1st quarter self-evaluation. I will use this information to make adjustments and improvements in our class, as well as better support individual student needs. Thank for your thoughtful feedback!
- Story of World Maps Project: We then returned to our article detailing immigration into the United States from Central America. Students used their close reading strategies to analyze the reading and the corresponding charts and graphs. Students used this graphic organizer to collect their thoughts and review the assignment instructions. Students will use this information to begin creating their maps about Central American immigration into the United States. The purpose of this lesson is to reinforce student understanding of the themes of geography, types of maps, and analysis of charts and graphs in a way that deepens their understanding of the world. We'll create these maps each time we study a region of the world more closely.
- Students spent the remainder of class preparing their maps. We'll work on this for the next class period or so.
