Dear Global Studies students,
Thanks for another great day of class! Discussing culture can be extremely difficult, but you all are handling the task extremely well. I am confident that by the end of our unit, you'll have a much firmer grasp of what culture is and how culture reflects society and society reflects culture (KN 15). Here's what we worked on today:

Thanks for another great day of class! Discussing culture can be extremely difficult, but you all are handling the task extremely well. I am confident that by the end of our unit, you'll have a much firmer grasp of what culture is and how culture reflects society and society reflects culture (KN 15). Here's what we worked on today:
Learning Targets:
- I can explain how culture both reflects and shapes society.
- I can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- I can communicate and work effectively within a team or group.
- I can identify critical components of culture using specific examples.
- RAP: Culture Bags. Thanks again to those who presented their culture bags today. We learned a great deal more about our classmates, their families, their cultures, and what they hold to be near and dear. What a treat!
- What is culture? We spent a bit more time today reinforcing our learning about culture by reviewing surface, shallow, and deep components of culture. Students reviewed these prompts and wrote short paragraphs describing elements of their culture. These prompts and paragraphs led into our next activity and reinforced past learning.
- Danger of a Single Story: To end class, we continued reading passages from "Just Walk By" by Brent Staples and brainstormed ideas for our personal essays. Students should complete drafts of their personal essays with at least two vignettes (short stories) by next class using the included graphic organizer. Be sure to watch Chimamanda Adichie Danger of a Single Story TED talk for an excellent example of vignettes.
