Здравствуйте! Hello global studies students! I had a wonderful time celebrating Diwali with you today. Click here if you'd like more information about the holiday and how to best celebrate. Thanks for your great effort today! Here's what we worked on:
Learning Targets:
Learning Targets:
- I can explain how culture both reflects and shapes society (KN 15).
- I can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing (CO 1).
- I can communicate and work effectively within a team or group (BLT 3).
- I can identity the critical components of culture using examples.
- RAP: To open class, several of our Diwali experts in class shared their knowledge and experience about the holiday while we ate some traditional Indian sweets. Thanks again to all the families who contributed!
- What is Culture? We extended our conversation about culture from the previous class, reviewing our responses on our Culture Worksheets, and learning more about the diversity of cultural practices in class.
- The Cultural Iceberg: We then reviewed the Cultural Iceberg model and applied what we understand about our cultures onto the iceberg graphic organizer. The focus of our learning here is to reveal the deeper levels of thinking, values, and beliefs that shape our everyday cultural practices. In order to do this, we need to develop new language for describing our experiences. The iceberg is designed to help us do this. I loved seeing students grapple and think through their own cultural traditions and beliefs.
- Culture Bag: I then introduced the Culture Bag assignment. To ground and deepen our learning about culture, students will present "culture bags" of items that represent cultural values or beliefs in class. To model, I showed students my own culture bag.
