Thank you for continuing to be one of my highlights of the week. I appreciate your sincere effort and passion for learning; these qualities really come through in everything you do! Here's how we ended our week in class:
Learning Targets:
- I can explain how culture both reflects and shapes society (KN 15).
- I can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing (CO 1).
- I can identity critical components of my culture using specific examples.
- Dia De Los Muertos! We opened class by briefly learning about, discussing, and celebrating Dia De Los Muertos. Here is a brief article describing in more detail the history and traditions of the holiday. I brought in some sweet bread for all of us to share and eat while we reflected on the lives and spirits of the loved ones no longer with us.
- Culture Bags! A BIG THANK YOU to those of you who presented your culture bags today. We could not have had better models to start off our presentations. Learning about culture requires us to reflect on the elements that define our culture most. We learned a tremendous amount about our presenters today.
- Danger of A Single Story: We began a lesson about what Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Adichie describes as "The Danger of A Single Story." To start, students spent time reflecting on their cultural icebergs and discussing stereotypes that people often assume about ourselves. We will then use what we began brainstorming in class eventually write a personal narrative that highlights our own culture while at the same time giving room for us to also refute or provide a counter-claim to the stereotypes and prejudices people make about us.
