Hi global studies students! Great work again today. As we near the end of our first unit "Where I'm From," it is important to review your notes between class to keep up with the new ideas and concepts we're adding each class. Here's what we worked on today:
Learning Targets:
Learning Targets:
- I can demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of locations and regions (KN 7).
- I can communicate and work effectively within a team or group (BLT 3).
- I can distinguish between different types of maps.
- I can analyze data from charts and graphs.
- RAP: We opened class with a review of our notes from last class: distinguishing the different types of maps. We used the review strategy, "Give One, Get One," to review the major types of maps we learned: political, physical, climatic, thematic, economic/resource, topographic, and road. Afterward, students summarized their learning in their Cornell notes.
- Story of Maps: We then began learning more about the types of stories that maps tell, focusing on how geographers use data from charts and graphs to create maps. First I asked students to brainstorm and reflect about this map illustrating rates of poverty in Oregon. Afterward, I introduced a story about Central American immigration into the United States. Students listened to the article, took notes, and then discussed with their classmates. We ran out of time, but we will pick up this story next Monday and analyze the data to help us create new maps.
- Closing: Students ended class with a round of appreciations and concerns.
