Hi global studies family! Glad you have you back in class, I always find working with you all quite a treat. Here's what we worked on today:
Learning Targets:
Learning Targets:
- I can demonstrate how culture both reflects and shapes society (KN 15).
- I can explain multiple viewpoints and perspectives (CR 1).
- I can make an argument for how school shapes and reflects culture.
- RAP: Culture Bags! What another great round of culture bags, thank you to everyone who presented and shared such a range of traditions, attitudes, and beliefs. I especially appreciate the question and answer time we have following each presentation. Keep the good questions coming! As a friendly reminder, be sure to complete your Culture Bag assignment sheet before presenting. You'll need this to turn in.
- Main Stage: Analyzing how American Indian boarding schools shaped and reflected society at that time. Students read this powerful NPR article about American Indian boarding schools and the past and current controversy surrounding them. As we read, students created a concept map to help unpack their learning, see an example here. We read, discussed, reflected, then kept reading until we made our way through most of the article.
- Closing: To end class, I assigned students to create their own arguments for how culture has been shaped or reflected their own schooling experience. Students should follow a similar brainstorm process that we modeled in class, and then create an argument using the ARE craft of argument method. Students should have Cornell notes to assist their work.
