Welcome to the start of second semester! I'm looking forward to the remainder of the year and the learning we will be doing. We will start the semester by examining how demographics can help us understand the impact of immigration before then learning more about climate change. Before then, of course, make sure you turn in any outstanding or missing work. Wednesday is the last day I'll take any missing work!
Learning Targets:
Be sure to complete and turn-in any missing work by Wednesday! Grade are due by the end of the week, and I want you to receive the grade you feel like you deserve for 1st semester!
Learning Targets:
- I can explain demographic changes in the world and their effects.
- I can explain connections between events, issues, problems, and concepts.
- I can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- I can describe how demographics help us understand the impact of immigration in society.
- RAP: To open class, I asked students to write what they know about, or what they think the following terms mean: 2042, demographics, immigration. Then after some discussion, I used these terms to introduce our new unit about demographics and immigration. According to analysts of U.S. census data, 2042 will mark the year when people of color Americans will outnumber white Americans. As our demographics shift, how will society change? To better understand changing demographics, we will examine immigration as one significant contributor to the changing demographics in the U.S.
- Main Stage: Next we took brief Cornell notes about some basic vocabulary: demographics, immigration, refugee, population, foreign-born. Afterward, we applied our understanding of this vocabulary by examining the New York Times article, "Minorities in U.S. set to become majority by 2042." Next we watched an episode from America by the Numbers titled, "Mainstream, USA." The purpose of the episode is to give students a deeper understanding of how demographics can help us understand what is happening in the United States.
- Closing: To end class we reviewed what we learned about demographics and immigration. Students completed an exit ticket and their Mainstream, USA discussion questions to help reflect about the episode they watched.
