Hi budding social scientists! We are in a mad sprint toward the holiday break from school. If we do not miss any days of school this week, then we'll have a chance to wrap up our culture unit and you'll be able to have a homework free break! Lets keep working hard together to accomplish this goal.
Learning Targets:
Learning Targets:
- I can explain how culture both reflects and shapes society (KN 15).
- I can explain multiple perspectives and viewpoints (CR 1).
- I can identify arguments for and against the Mexican American Studies Program in the Tucson Unified School District.
- RAP: Culture bags! We're down to our last few days of culture bags - I sure will hate when we wrap these up. It has been great learning more about the breadth and diversity of cultures represented in our class.
- Main Stage: Identifying arguments for and against the Mexican American Studies program presented through the film Precious Knowledge. To guide our viewing, students previewed our future essay prompt: "Should the ban on the Mexican American Studies Program be overturned? Why or why not?" We finished the documentary in class, and created posters with sticky notes that represented the various arguments students identified from the film. We'll be using these notes to help us brainstorm our own arguments for our upcoming argumentative essay.
- Closing: Introducing the DBQ (Document-Based Question) assessment. All global studies teachers are introducing DBQ's this semester, preparing students for what they'll surely see in future social studies classes. The goal of the DBQ is to assess student ability to analyze, interpret, and synthesize information and apply their knowledge by answering a longer writing prompt. I introduced the assessment and we modeled the first set of questions. Students will need to finish at least five of the seven sets of questions (part 1) by Wednesday.
