Hi global studies team! Thanks again for another fun and purposeful class. I truly look forward to working with you each day. Here's what we worked on:
Learning Targets:
Learning Targets:
- I can explain how culture both reflects and shapes society.
- I can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- I can explain how culture is shaped by and reflected in the Mexican American Studies Program at Tucson High School.
- RAP: Culture Bags! Another great round of culture bags, thanks to all who presented. I wish we could continue them throughout the year.
- Main Stage: Reviewing our arguments about school and examining the Mexican American Studies Program at Tucson High School. First, students spend 10 minutes in pairs reviewing their arguments about how school shapes and reflects culture. Students highlighted the three major components of arguments we've learned in class thus far: assertion, reasoning, and evidence, and then gave their partners appreciations. Next students began watching the documentary Precious Knowledge, about the controversial Mexican-American Studies Program in Tucson Unified School District. Students used this worksheet to help them examine and process their learning from the documentary. (If you missed class, come see me to talk about ways you can borrow the documentary DVD or borrow a classmate's notes). We'll use all our notes from the documentary to support our argumentative writing for our upcoming Culture test.
- Closing: Students watched and completed the Precious Knowledge worksheet.
