Hi economics classes! As we begin working on our final project for our first unit of the year, be sure to review your notes and turn-in any missing work. Grades will be posted next week. Also, next week you will be taken out of class for SBAC testing, so think of this as our final week before you have a two-week break.
Learning Target:
Learning Target:
- I can self-direct my learning
- I can demonstrate an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of various economic systems.
- I can identify evidence to support a thesis for my upcoming op-ed.
- RAP: To open class, students reviewed a series of photographs taken by Matt Black a couple of years ago documenting poverty across the United States. These powerful photos provide students with a chance to describe, examine, and wonder about the strengths and weaknesses of the U.S. economy. I used this to give students a chance to begin evaluating the economic system we all live in.
- Main Stage: Next we read an article that compared and contrasted American Capitalism with Nordic Mixed Economies. Students tracked characteristics of both systems and discussed what surprised them. The article both provided students with a chance to better understand economic systems today, while also providing a good example of an op-ed that evaluates economic systems.
- Closing: To end class students received the op-ed prompt and we began working on our final op-ed essays. Students will begin writing an argumentative essay, due by the end of next week. On Thursday we will workshop evidence and thesis statements before giving students a chance to write rough drafts.
