Hi Global Studies classes! Loved how enthusiastic you feel about our final unit of the semester. Remember, as we draw closer to finals week it is important that you keep up with what we're working on in class and complete any outstanding work. This is the hardest time of the year to catch up!
Learning Targets:
Learning Targets:
- I can explain how culture both shapes and reflects society.
- I can demonstrate understanding of the characteristics of locations and regions.
- I can explain how and why societies organize themselves and how power is organized and maintained.
- I can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- I can analyze how geography, culture, and government shape Ladakhi society.
- RAP: To open class, students spent some time responding and discussing the following prompts: "Why do societies change?" and "What makes a society modern?" I used these questions and responses to help students brainstorm answers for our final unit the first semester, "Learning from Ladakh." We will be examining the changes that took place in Ladakhi society using what we know about geography, culture, government, and economics to figure out why societies change and what a "modern" society means.
- Main Stage: Next students watched the first 25 minutes from the documentary, Ancient Futures, about the Ladakhi people of Northern India. Students took notes from the documentary with this graphic organizer, designed to prompt and remind students to make connections between the documentary and what they've learned about geography, culture, government, and economics. Afterward, students shared their findings and discussed the film in small groups before we had another whole class discussion.
- Closing: Before we dive more deeply into the changes that took place to Ladakhi society, students will need to read the foreword, introduction, and chapter 1 from these excerpted pages from the book Ancient Futures. To distill what they've watched and read, students should complete the Character Retrieval Chart before next class. The purpose of this graphic organizer is to give students a chance to think and feel from the perspective of the Ladakh.
