Woo! Last day until spring break! I hope everyone is looking forward to time away from school to rest, play, study, and recharge. I'm definitely looking forward to recharging, and will be spending more time with my partner and family, and of course seeing friends!
Learning Targets:
(I know, I know. Homework over spring break is not fair or fun. However I want to make sure we can hit the ground running with our learning when we return from the break. We have a big research project to begin after spring break, and so the more time you have to complete it, the better).
Learning Targets:
- I can identify the critical components of imperialism
- I can explain connections between events, issues, problems, and concepts.
- I can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- I can describe colonialism and identify its effects on Africa during the 19th century.
- RAP: To open class, we reviewed the reading questions assigned Tuesday. To unpack the reading, students were assigned two questions in order for us to have a "Mixer" today about European colonization of Africa. After spending some time preparing in our groups, students mixed with one another, sharing their answers. The purpose of this activity is to break up, and "chunk" the large reading students will need to complete over spring break.
- Main Stage: Next, students began learning more about the political geography of Africa, past and present. In small groups, students reviewed these maps about Africa and completed the attached questions. The purpose of this assignment is to acquaint students with the geography of Africa, and give them a visual understanding of how colonization affected people and place.
- Closing: To end class, I wanted students to summarize their learning for the day by responding to the prompt: What were the effects of colonization of Africa during the 19th century? How did African governments, economies, religion, and society change? Using sticky notes, students brainstormed responses and then shared their thinking with the whole class.
