Hi Global Studies scholars! Glad we're now FINALLY at the semester break. I cannot wait to launch a second semester with you next week. In the meantime, be sure to turn in any outstanding work. Deadline is tomorrow, Friday!
Learning Targets:
Learning Targets:
- I can explain how culture both shapes and reflects society.
- I can demonstrate understanding of the characteristics of locations and regions.
- I can explain how and why societies organize themselves and how power is organized and maintained.
- I can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- I can design a project that supports Indigenous peoples at WHS and in Beaverton.
- RAP: We opened class by discussing "So what's next? What did we learn from Ladakh and how can we make good use of our learning?" Students brainstormed what elements of Ladakh society was most threatened by development and modernization, and then wrote a brief reflection about how society was affected. Afterward students then discussed their responses before launching into our main lesson for today.
- Main Stage: To bridge our understanding of what happened in Ladakh with how we can support indigenous communities here in Beaverton and Oregon, students then read, "Making the Invisible Visible: Portland's Native American Community." This impactful report details the destruction and resilience of Native Americans here. Afterward, we discussed, and then read a short news article about the use of Indigenous knowledge in Beaverton School science camp. These articles stimulated some new ideas for students to use when designing their own projects.
- Closing: To end class, students worked in groups to develop projects to support indigenous communities here and then presented their ideas. The purpose here is give students a chance to apply what they know about the Ladakh and apply it to what we witness taking place locally.
