Hi Global Studies scholars! Loved seeing your work today applying what you've learned about the craft of argument to prepare your defense in our trial next week. Keep up the strong effort! We're almost at the end of the semester. Also, be safe tonight and tomorrow morning. Ice is no fun.
Learning Targets:
Learning Targets:
- I can explain how culture both shapes and reflects society.
- I can demonstrate understanding of the characteristics of locations and regions.
- I can explain how and why societies organize themselves and how power is organized and maintained.
- I can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- I can illustrate elements of Ladakh society using notes from the film and reading.
- RAP: To open class we reviewed our Ladakh illustrations of geography, culture, and government that we began last class. The purpose is to review and apply what we've learned about the Ladakh so we can be as ready as possible for our trial.
- Main Stage: The Case of Social Destruction of Ladakh. Now that we've tracked how Ladakh society was transformed by the introduction of "modernization" and western principles of development, its time that we apply what we know about the craft of argument and decide, "who is to blame for the social destruction of Ladakh?" We divided into six groups, including: tourists, the Indian Government, The Ladakhi's, the Global Capitalist Economy, "Modern" ideas, People in the U.S., and a United Nations panel. Then we read through our indictments using our close reading strategies, and then in small groups discussed what we learned and who is to blame.
- Closing: To end class, students then took their understanding of the indictments and crafted their own ARE-guments using the format we've learned about this semester. Students must complete their arguments, one that BLAMES another group, and one that DEFENDS their own group. These two arguments should be written on a separate sheet of paper and will be due as part of their final.
