Hi Global Studies team! Loved your engagement and work in class. I hope that you can continue to see how learning about other societies, such as Ladakh, give us just as much knowledge about ourselves when we take the time to reflect. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing your internal monologues next week!
Learning Targets:
Learning Targets:
- I can explain how culture both shapes and reflects society.
- I can demonstrate understanding of the characteristics of locations and regions.
- I can explain how and why societies organize themselves and how power is organized and maintained.
- I can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- I can consider who or what is to blame for the decline of Ladakhi society.
- RAP: To open class, I asked students to consider what "cultural invasion" might mean, and how this concept might apply to what they will witness about Ladakhi society. We first examined a cartoon (see slides/class notes below), then created spillover charts that predicted what might happen to the Ladakh with the introduction of: tourism, compulsory schooling, highway development, foreign movies, imports of inexpensive wheat and barely, and the arrival of new retail stores. This work also served as a reminder of what we learned about the Ladakh from the previous class.
- Main Stage: Next, students watched the second half of Ancient Futures: Lessons from a globalizing world (from approximately 25 minute mark to the end). Students completed this graphic organizer to track the ways Ladakhi society changed, specifically tracking changes to geography, culture, government, and economy.
- Closing: We ended class with a brief discussion of our impressions and thoughts about the documentary, and with explanation of the homework assignment. Students should complete Chapter 8 and Chapter 12 from the reading, and then using all their notes from the film and reading, complete an interior monologue from the perspective of a Ladakhi member of society who has witnessed the dramatic changes brought by the "modern" world. These should be written in the first person, and should consider who or what is to blame for the decline of Ladakhi society.
